Mille Lacs Area’s 5th Annual Christmas Bird Count

It’s the Mille Lacs Area’s 5th Annual Christmas Bird Count.

Each winter, tens of thousands of volunteers from across North America head outside with binoculars to count and identify birds in their communities. They’re taking part in the Christmas Bird Count, a National Audubon Society program now in its 124th year.

The annual citizen science census provides important data about how bird populations are changing over time.

But the bird count is more than a way to gather data. For many, it’s a beloved annual tradition.

The event provides a way for bird lovers to get outside, have fun and help advance science.

The group will meet at Eddy’s Resort at 8 am on January 5th for breakfast and direction. Groups will head out to count birds within the 15-mile circumference area.

The Mille Lacs-South area includes the communities of Isle, Wahkon, Onamia, Vineland, and birding hot-spots such as Kathio State Park, Fr. Hennepin State Park, The Mille Lacs WMA, and Izatys Resort.

The event is sponsored by the Lake Mille Lacs Scenic Byway and coordinated and led by Local Bird Expert Judd Brink.
